What are the common types of plumbing services?

Should I fix a leaky toilet or call someone who knows what they’re doing?

Fixing a leaky toilet is usually very easy. It’s not a hard plumbing system job, and it doesn’t require any expensive tools to get the job done. If you’re unsure about what to do, these steps will get you on your way:

• Unplug the power cord for the tank from its socket
• Remove the screw at the bottom of each handle or knob
• Pry off either trim plate or top of tank with a flat head screwdriver and lift off cover
• Find out where pipe connections are leaking by watching water flow (best done after toileting). Identify which part needs to be replaced or repaired (handle set, ballcock assembly, floor plate; etc.) and replace.
• Reassemble and plug in toilet.

Carefully locate the leaky pipe and seal it off by wrapping the plumber’s tape around it or using a hose clamp to pinch the leaking section together tightly enough so that no water can escape.

How do I know if my water heater is working correctly?

Your water heater should be able to produce hot, clean drinking water within a few minutes of turning it on. A good way to test this is by filling a glass with cold tap water from the kitchen sink and waiting for your bathtub or shower faucet to turn warm. If you have an electric storage tank-type unit, run your finger over the top – if there’s no heat coming out, it’ll feel cool when you touch it (or go check in person). Call a plumber if you don’t see any steam coming out of the pipes inside and outside after about 15 minutes! Your system may need maintenance work right away.
